Hackathon Emissions
How much carbon emissions are generated by hosting a hackathon? Let's take a look at how we made our calculations!
Emissions of Hackathon: 226.511kgCO2e
Limitations and challenges
1. Follow established guidelines and principles
We made reference to the principles of the "A Net Zero Roadmap for the Events Industry" and the "Greenhouse Gas Protocol" for the estimation.
2. Activity data collection:
We attempted to collect data from the event, including collecting information from each participant about their traveling.
3. Online Data Sourcing:
We mainly use validated carbon emissions data from the Ministry of the Environment.
Material emissions and how did we manage it ?
The main carbon emissions are food and travel. In terms of food, we ordered some vegetarian bento to reduce carbon emissions, but unfortunately we were unable to accurately estimate the quantity, resulting in leftovers being wasted.
In terms of travel, we encouraged people to use public transportation beforehand, and the results were very effective, with nearly 95% of people using low-carbon transportation to come to the venue.
1. Food:
Lack of accurate data, only similar types of food can be used as a reference basis.
2. Waste:
There is also a lack of data on the carbon emissions of the sticky notes we used, and we can only estimate the carbon emissions of A4 paper.
Conclusion
Calculating carbon emissions is much more difficult than calculating how much carbon has been reduced. Through this experience, we have learned the importance and challenges of carbon reduction strategies, which we believe will help us in our future campaign!
